First published in the author’s poetry collection, The Sibyl (2022), from Partridge Publishing Singapore.
From the author:
‘Her’ is a poem about the chaotic Sublime, through observations of the ocean and a tsunami. The poem likens the ocean to a woman’s body and explores surrender to the Sublime. Chaos is examined not as something godlike and fear-inducing but as a force that can be embraced only through surrender. Fundamentally, the poem is both a hymn to and an exercise in Chaosophy.
(for Her)
Her ravishing roar silenced By Her whispering ebb. A repetitious humdrum That was far from the mundane. A piercing pulchritude that mocked time. I am swollen with deafening infinity. The radiant sun spares no one. As She scattered her rays The sparkles danced off waves. Ain lay before me and it was everything. Powerless to shift my stare While the glistening gripped my soul. The salty scent that fills my being The burn of the sting from the salt. Intoxicating. She had not touched me But she had and left me drunk as My empty shell washed ashore. Inebriated, dizzy, ecstatic where I lay. Nor did I want to be elsewhere For what more would I need to seek? The terrific, the terrifying, Her majesty, Her magnificence! Her wrath churned the waters. I stood rooted, awestruck, As Her advances threatened on the horizon— Take me, I am yours to devour. The waves rise and tower above me. I am helplessly consumed by the immense As I am willingly swallowed by Her
